AI-driven business models for social enterprises

Process

To successfully complete this mission, you will follow a structured process. Each team will need to research, analyse, and design an innovative proposal for a social enterprise in their community. You will work as a team of innovation consultants, while also using AI tools to support your proposals.

1. Gather the innovation team!

Just like in the business world, teamwork is key to achieving a successful result. Teams should organize themselves by assigning different roles based on the skills of their members. While everyone should be involved in all tasks, at a minimum, the team should have:

  1. Project Leader: Coordinates the team and oversees the process.
  2. Business Analyst: Researches the company and identifies opportunities.
  3. AI Specialist: Explores applicable AI tools.
  4. Proposal Designer: Creates visual materials and the presentation.
  5. Presenter: Delivers the final pitch to the “company committee.”

2. Exploration: identifying a Social Enterprise.

Identify a social enterprise in your community. It doesn’t have to be a large company; small local actions can also make a big impact.

Social enterprises can be NGOs, cooperatives, startups, or traditional businesses with a social impact. To ensure you’re searching correctly, review the provided resources to refresh your understanding of how to identify a social impact enterprise.

Look around, you’ll be surprised by the amazing things happening in your community!

To support your search, you can use Perplexity AI, an AI-powered search engine that provides well-structured answers and verified sources. It’s an ideal tool for finding information about social enterprises in your area.

Share your proposals with your team. Together, choose one social enterprise to work on from now on. You can select it based on its reach and impact, the social group it serves, or simply the one that seems most interesting to you.

3. Business analysis.

Search for detailed information about the company and complete the “Template _ Social Enterprise Analysis.” Collect data from its website, social media, interviews, or news articles.

You can also use tools like ChatGPT to explore information about the company. Ask the AI what it knows about your selected enterprise but always verify the information before using it. Check out these resources to learn how to interact more efficiently with this tool.

Here’s an example of a prompt you can use to start your research:

  • Act as a business analyst. I want to learn more about the company [Company Name], based in [City/Region]. Please provide a summary including: its history, main products or services, target market, number of employees, company size, location, and any other publicly available information about how the company operates. I’m also interested in understanding its main business processes, areas of improvement, and possible challenges.

4. How can AI help the Social Impact Enterprise? Identifying opportunities for improvement.

Identify potential areas within this company where AI can add value. What processes could be more efficient, reduce costs, or enhance impact? Here are some ways AI can improve its operations and help it become more efficient, scalable, and sustainable.

Operational efficiency: achieving more with less.

Social enterprises often work with limited resources. AI can automate repetitive tasks, cut costs, and optimize resource allocation. For example, implementing a tool  to automatically answer common questions can improve customer service without the need for additional staff, allowing employees to focus on more strategic tasks.

Process optimization: reducing time and errors.

Many social enterprises rely on manual processes that are time-consuming and can lead to mistakes. AI can help streamline workflows, improve logistics, allocate resources more efficiently, and make more accurate predictions.

For example, a sustainable fashion company produces clothing from recycled materials and works with small local producers under fair trade conditions. Their inventory management is done manually, leading to overproduction or shortages of certain products. AI can automate inventory tracking and suggest when and how much material to restock, helping to reduce waste and optimize production.

Data analysis: making better decisions with real time information.

Social impact enterprises constantly generate data (beneficiaries, donations, social impact, etc.), but many do not use it strategically. AI can analyse large amounts of data, detect patterns, and generate reports in seconds, helping organizations make more informed decisions.

For example, a social impact café that employs people at risk of social exclusion struggles to predict the exact amount of ingredients needed each week. Sometimes they buy too much, leading to food waste, or buy too little, causing shortages. By implementing an AI system to predict product demand, the café can analyse past sales data, weather conditions, holidays, and consumer trends. Based on this information, AI can suggest how many ingredients should be purchased each week, reducing waste and optimizing inventory management.

Improving the customer and beneficiary experience.

AI can personalize services and improve the experience of beneficiaries in social enterprises. From personalized recommendations to virtual assistants, AI helps ensure that each person receives the support or services they truly need.

For example, a local fair trade and organic supermarket implements an AI-driven recommendation system, similar to those used by streaming platforms, but applied to food. This system suggests products based on individual customer preferences, creating a more personalized and engaging shopping experience.

Personalization and accessibility: reaching more people.

Many social enterprises work with vulnerable populations or individuals with specific needs. AI can make information more accessible and adapt services to each user.

For example, an AI-powered voice recognition system can help visually impaired individuals access information more easily.

Marketing and Visibility: Attracting More Support.

Social enterprises need to promote their work and attract customers, volunteers, or donors. AI can help create more effective marketing strategies, from automated social media management to analyzing which types of content generate the most engagement.

For example, a company that sells shoes and employs people with disabilities wants to expand its reach and attract more ethically conscious customers. AI assists by identifying target audiences, segmenting that audience and sending personalized messages to those most likely to donate. It also writes engaging posts, suggests the best times to publish, and generates promotional images and short videos for social media.

5. Building the AI-Powered Solution.

Select one idea from your brainstorming session that is easy to implement in your company and try to find a tool that can bring it to life with just a few steps.

You will likely find an AI tool that can help the company create more engaging communication campaigns with limited resources, set up a chatbot to handle inquiries efficiently, or analyse data quickly, among others. You can start by exploring some tools in the WebQuest resources.

Select at least one AI tool that could be implemented in the social enterprise. Analyze how this tool can improve the company’s activities and how it would be integrated into its daily operations.

6. Presentation – Convincing the Founders.

Now it’s time to shine. After analysing the social enterprise, identifying areas for improvement, and designing an AI-powered solution, you’ve reached one of the most important steps: presenting your proposal. Imagine you’re in a meeting with the company’s founders. They are interested in improving their business and amplifying their impact, but they need to be convinced that integrating AI tools is a good idea.

How will you convince them to believe in your proposal? Present your solution in a clear, engaging, and persuasive way. It’s not just about explaining your research, but about demonstrating how AI can make a real difference in their business and getting the founders excited about the opportunity.

To create your presentation, use AI-powered design tools and solutions to achieve an eye-catching and professional result.
